Florida Watering Tips

Figuring out when and how much to water your Florida lawn is crucial to keeping it green year round

Let’s face it, when it comes to watering your lawn it seems as if everyone has an opinion. While it is not an exact science, there are some general rules to follow in order to keep your lawn properly watered depending on the season. Here are some tips to help you keep your lawn properly watered no matter the season. And of course, if you would rather not worry about watering your lawn the experts at Keepers of the Green can make sure your grass is getting the water it needs.

How much water does your lawn need?

In the Tampa Bay area, soil is generally sandy. It should hold one inch of water in the top 12 inches of soil. If the soil is dry it should get between ½ and ¾ inches of water to make sure the roots are hydrated. In the summer months it is best to water your lawn between two and three days per week. In the winter months it can be reduced to one day per week, as a general rule. With normal sprinkler heads, the average time per watering is about 30-45 minutes.

When is it best to water your lawn?

The best time is the early morning hours. That is usually between 4 – 9 a.m. The reason is because it takes advantage of the natural dew time. Watering in late morning or late afternoon extends a lawn’s dew time, which can lead to disease. Watering in the heat of the day leads to water waste because of excessive evaporation. It is also wise to consult your county’s watering restrictions.

Make sure your yard is being watered uniformly

At Keepers of the Green, we make sure the irrigation installation is done right. But if you suspect there are parts of your yard that may not be getting enough water, or too much, there is a way to check. Place small, straight-edged cans from the sprinkler to the edge of the watering pattern. Run the sprinklers for 15 minutes and then check to see that the same amount of water is in each of the cans. If it is not receiving the same amount of water it can lead to dry spots. It may be due to a broken or misaimed sprinkler head. The pros and Keepers of the Green can check your sprinkler system to make sure your lawn is getting the water it needs.
